Wedding Dress Alterations in 2024

Recently, I asked AI to tell me what kind of advice a wedding dress seamstress needed to give to brides who are planning on getting married in 2024.  Below are 10 bullet points “The BOT” delivered, as well as my comments as to whether I agree or disagree:

1. Start Early

AI: Begin alterations at least three months before the wedding to ensure there is enough time for fittings and adjustments.
Me: Dresses typically take 6-8 months to come in after being ordered. My suggestion is to call your wedding dress seamstress the day you order your dress to book your appointments.  I am often booked out 6-8 months in advance.

2. Budget for Alterations

AI: Factor in the cost of alterations into your overall wedding dress budget, as they can be significant.
Me: The cost of wedding dress alterations will depend on the geographical area you live in, as well as the knowledge and experience of the wedding dress seamstress you hire.

3. Find a Specialist

AI: Choose a seamstress or tailor who specializes in wedding dress alterations to ensure the best results.
Me: I agree with this wholeheartedly. The expertise required for wedding dress alterations is more detailed than most common alterations, so it is good to make sure you find someone who has experience in this area.

4. Bring Your Shoes and Undergarments

AI: Always bring the shoes and undergarments you plan to wear with your dress to each fitting.
Me: Yes, to get the truest fit, this can’t be emphasized enough.

5. Be Mindful of Size Fluctuations

AI: If you anticipate significant weight changes, discuss this with your seamstress to plan accordingly.
Me: I often tell my brides “I am now on a ‘need to know’ basis,” meaning, if there are any variables (i.e. medications, weight-loss, or any other factors) that could cause a fluctuation in weight, I need to know about it as soon as possible.

6: Schedule Multiple Fittings

AI: Expect to have at least two to three fittings to achieve the perfect fit.
Me: I view altering a wedding dress as a work of art. Like most art, it is a progressive endeavor. While there may be some wedding dress seamstresses who only require 2 or 3 appointments, those are usually longer appointments than ours. I have learned through the years that the best way to get the best ‘Look, Fit & Feel” is by booking at least 4-5, 30-minute appointments to allow for the dress to be custom fit to each particular bride’s figure.

7: Understand Structural Limits:

AI: Some dresses can’t be altered beyond a certain point without changing their structure or design.
Me: I often tell brides that it is inadvisable to push certain wedding dresses beyond the integrity of their design. That said, because of my experience with working with thousands of dresses and hundreds of designs, there are some “tricks-of-the-trade” that can sometimes be implemented to stretch the potential of what is normally possible.

8. Trust Professional Opinions:

AI: Your seamstress’s experience is invaluable; trust their advice on what can and cannot be done.
Me: I agree 100% here. I tell my brides that I want this to be a fun process and the least stressful part of wedding planning. I often say, “This is a stress-free zone.” Having full confidence in the wedding dress seamstress you hire is a must.

9. Consider Movement and Comfort:

AI: Make sure you can move, sit, and dance comfortably in your altered dress.
Me: Each style is different and will effect your ability to move in the dress. I always advise brides that they are not used to wearing a custom-made garment and that their dress is not going to fit like things they are used to wearing for their daily wear. I tell them “this is the dress you fell is love with” and that they are going to get used to how it feels. I say, “You may or may not be able to dance to ‘The YMCA’ in that dress, but at least you’ll look amazing!

10. Respect the Process:

AI: Understand that some alterations can’t be rushed without sacrificing quality.
Me: Exactly. Every area of the dress that is worked on is a step-by-step progression, so be patient and trust the process.

Remember, the goal of alterations is to make your wedding dress fit you perfectly, reflecting both your body and your personal style on your special day. Several year ago, seeing the advancement of AI, I wrote a blog post titled “Will Robots Replace Wedding Dress Seamstresses ) https://customsewingbyheather.com/title-will-robots-replace-wedding-dress-seamstresses/).  I am happy to report that I have not been replaced yet.  🙂
